The gleaming stars all about the shining moon
Sappho, fr. 34
The gleaming stars all about the shining moon
Hide their bright faces, when full-orbed and splendid
In the sky she floats, flooding the shadowed earth
with clear silver light.
This fragment probably belonged to a longer poem, dedicated to a girl who was going to get married. The bride's beauty dulled the other girls, as the full moon does with the stars.
